New York 70's
« on: January 26, 2012, 06:35:19 PM »
Hi folks,
In my fascination of all yachts, I have now moved away from the NY 40 and beginning my education on the NY 70's.  However, although I have been able to research who owned the 4 yachts built, their fate, their LOA, LWL, Beam & Draft; I have not found any references in any book todate wrt their displacement, balast and sail area  :-\

Can anyone give me the missing details or point me in the right direction?

Steve

Displacement was 84 tons.  Sail Area of course varied with the rig, but you could use 6,950 sq. ft.

What was their fate?

I never found out.

Mineola #529 LOA 106' LWL 70' Beam 19'4" Draft 14' $32,593.75
Rainbow #532
Virginia #533
Yankee #534

The 70's were almost the size of Resolute (1914) but planked in wood.  While the yachts had trouble structurally (Bray and Pinheiro, 2005 p.100 until they were braced after the first season, it appears they were a spectacle-- see http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F70C12FF385A16738DDDAF0994D1405B808CF1D3 from Sept. 1900.

They were obsolete with the adoption of the Universal Rule in 1903.  Given how hard they were raced it is unlikely they survived many more seasons.  For details of a crash see http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F50A14FC3C5B11738DDDAA0A94D0405B808CF1D3

This article has two pictures of Rainbow in drydock as well as sharp commentary on the crashes.  http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/Outing/Volume_37/outXXXVII02/outXXXVII02s.pdf
