Yes, indeed. I do believe it is a camber spar for the jib. Thanks much for clarifying this.

It may be a camber spar for the jib. Later rigs for the H-12 1/2 had them. See this drawing for the Fisher's Island version http://bullseyesailing.org/evolution.php and on page 49 here: http://smallboatrestoration.blogspot.com/2018/11/yachts-by-herreshoff-photo-book.html

Miscellaneous Herreshoff Topics / What is this?

I recently was lucky to come into possession of a 1930 Herreshoff 12 1/2. She is gaff rigged with club footed jib and I am excited to have her. Among the spars and accessory pieces was this curved piece that I can't figure out. It is asymmetrical in its curvature and somewhat tapered at one end. There is a hook type fitting at one end and an adjustable, pinned, slot fitting at the other. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Completely befuddled,
David

Herreshoff Boats For Sale / Re: NY 40 in Hawaii

Such a shame to see the asking price for this yacht. It will only allow her to languish in obscurity for many more years. Glad I was able to save one and get her back on the race course where she belongs. Looks like Rugosa is going for around the same figure. When will people realise that old knackered wooden boats are not worth such ridiculous sums.

Definitely a 40 but what's with the bulwarks! Any idea on the proposed sail plan, Charles?

Herreshoff Boats For Sale / Neglected HA18 Wanted
« Last post by brokenotbroken on December 13, 2018, 02:23:25 PM »
I'm looking for a neglected HA18 that my two young boys and I can work on together. I thought I had one lined up, but it appears to have been sold before I could get to it. Anyway, I'm not looking for a handout, but I can't afford a pristine one either. If you have one that is sitting around, needs work, and you would like to see back on the water or out of your yard, please contact me. I live in the Florida Panhandle but I'm willing to travel to pick up.

Thanks Charles, I looked there but they don't have minimum bridge clearance listed.  I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I even looked through the old sales brochure. It looks like I'm going to have to find someone with an HA18 and measure it myself.  Unfortunately, they are not very common down here in the Florida Panhandle. -david

Sailboat data.com tends to be a useful source for basic model data.  The Herreshoff America is here:

https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/herreshoff-america

It does not include clearance information.

Does anyone have this data to help?
