Miscellaneous Herreshoff Topics / Haven 12.5 Moulds Available
« on: November 01, 2015, 05:42:00 PM »
I have a set of Haven 12.5 frame moulds that I will offer free to a prospective amateur builder. These pine molds produced my boat which won 1st in class at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.  Arrange to ship or pick up from my shed north of Pittsburgh and they're yours. Call John Hutchison at 142-559-4949.

I'm very happy to see another H23 saved. I believe there are 6 boats surviving of the 14 built. Our Crusader #1225 is fully restored and sailing out of Plattsburgh NY.  We trailered her to HMM for the regatta in 2011 and are competing in the annual Mayors Cup Regatta on Lake Champlain soon.
These are quick boats that are easy to handle short handed. It would be great to eventually put together a one-design race or two.

If any info turns up on Crusader #1225, we'd love to know. Unfortunately, we don't have much history on her.
Thanks!

I'm sure sails were shared often.  Our H23 Crusader #1225 was the 12th boat built (according to the Register), however she was sold to us in 2008 with sail #3. We have since suited her with new sails under #12.

Dear HH,
Just noticed your post of the ad for Crusader.  I didn't know of this material and will track down a copy of this ad.  This sheds a bit of light on her history although I know she was sold to Fred Barton's boatyard in 1938...don't know where she went from there.
Thanks so much for your post...

Thanks for the help folks.  After 3.5 yrs of work I'm thrilled to have CRUSADER back on the water.  She needs more varnish but shows off her 80 yr old vintage well.  We enjoyed racing in Bristol with Amorita and Arion recently and now the boat is in our barn near Lake Placid , NY.  CRUSADER will sail northern Champlain next season out of Plattsburgh, NY.
Thanks again for the advice and encouragement!

Being from western PA, I've made close acquantance with Dave Beirig of Erie.  He takes great pride in producing classic sails (he's done a set for the square rigger Niagara) and is especially fond of Herreshoff boats.  He's done our Coquina sails and at this time is completing a new main, jib, genoa, and all covers for CRUSADER. His work is exceptional.

Very nice!  I see you built traditional method (the harder and more impressive way).  My Coquina is glued plywood...tough but not as pretty or correct.  From what I can see, your workmanship is excellent.  We love our Coquina and have trailered her all over New england and the mid west.  The only change I've made is to cut down the CB so it doesn't project up above the case.  This looks cleaner and makes the boat easier to row.  No change in performance...Maynard Bray has done this also.  Contact me anytime...my photos are here

Does anyone recognize this boat?  What class would it be?

George Darling is a great guy...  He was very helpful with advice during CRUSADER's rebuild.  And if you haven't seen Mashnee, you're really missing the absolute best workmanship.
Nice bronze bling... I need some too but my boat budget is shot.
